A powerful winter storm is set to sweep across southern Canada, bringing with it heavy snowfall, extreme cold, and dangerous windchill. Environment Canada has issued numerous warnings and watches across the country, urging residents to prepare for potentially disruptive weather conditions.
Most of southern Canada is bracing for a major winter weather blast, serving as a stark reminder that the season is far from over. Environment Canada has issued a plethora of winter weather warnings, watches, and statements across the country, with the southern provinces bearing the brunt of the wintry onslaught.
From Lethbridge, Alberta, which anticipates extreme cold with windchills plummeting to -40°C, eastward to Fredericton, New Brunswick, where up to 25 centimetres of snow is expected, a swathe of red paints the map, signifying the impending icy grip. Sections of British Columbia are also under warnings, with the North Coast and Whistler facing Arctic outflow – a potent combination of strong winds and wind chill – on Wednesday and Thursday. While the Elk Valley, Yoho Park, and Kootenay Park brace for significant snowfall, Newfoundland and Labrador is under an extreme cold warning, with wind chill temperatures dipping as low as -50°C overnight on Wednesday. Moving north, Iqaluit and Dempster, Yukon, are both under blizzard warnings. As for southern Ontario and Quebec, the warnings paint a mixed bag of winter woes, encompassing extreme cold, freezing rain, storms, and snowfall, depending on location. Heavy snowfall is anticipated to hit Toronto and much of southern Ontario on Wednesday, with Environment Canada forecasting around 15 centimetres in the city. Ottawa could receive up to 40 centimetres, prompting city crews to prepare for the onslaught. The Greater Toronto Area (GTA), including Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Mississauga, Brampton, Uxbridge, Durham Region, Pickering, Oshawa, Newmarket, Georgina, York Region, Oakville, Halton Hills, Milton, and Hamilton, is currently under a snowfall warning.Further eastward, a winter storm warning is in effect for Barrie, Collingwood, and Hillsdale from Wednesday evening into Thursday, with potential snowfall reaching up to 30 centimetres. Environment Canada warns that snowfall rates could exceed five centimetres per hour at their peak. Notably, several airlines at Toronto Pearson International Airport have already cancelled flights in anticipation of the storm. Environment Canada advises against travel if possible, as snowfall is expected to commence Wednesday afternoon and impact the Thursday morning commute. The agency issued a winter storm warning for Ottawa-Gatineau at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, upgrading a previous winter storm watch. A separate winter storm warning was also issued for western Quebec on Tuesday. Meteorologist Trudy Kidd from Environment Canada describes this storm as the most significant to hit Ottawa since 2022, when 47.8 centimetres of snow fell. In New Brunswick, Fredericton could see up to 25 centimetres of snow starting Thursday morning, potentially mixing with ice pellets. The rest of the province, including Saint John and Moncton, is under a special weather statement for 'significant winter weather'. Nova Scotia is also facing a flurry of warnings, with a winter storm watch in effect for Inverness County, Richmond County, Sydney and Cape Breton County, and Victoria County. Halifax anticipates 'messy winter weather' on Thursday, with up to 10 centimetres of snow. Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) is under a special weather statement beginning Thursday, with predictions of up to 25 centimetres of snowfall in some areas.
