Canada is starting to implement new immigration measures announced in response to the threat of a 25% tariff by President-elect Donald Trump. One of the first measures taking effect is a ban on 'flagpoling', where individuals on temporary visas leave for the U.S. and quickly re-enter Canada to access immigration services. Other measures include requiring online applications for temporary visa extensions and removing the point value for having a job offer in Canada's Express Entry immigration system.

Immigration measures announced as part of Canada ’s border response to president-elect Donald Trump ’s 25 per cent tariff threat are starting to be implemented, beginning with a ban on what’s known as “flagpoling.”

There are still rare exceptions where a person will be granted a work or study permit even though they meet the definition of flagpoling, including international truck drivers with a work permit, professionals under certain free trade agreements and American citizens. In a social media post, Miller said this will take effect in the spring and that it will be a temporary measure.

While there's no serious movement for Canada to join, Trump's comments seem aimed at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He plans to impose tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico to address illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking. Economists largely dismiss the trade deficit as insignificant, but Trump views it as a measure of economic success.
