BREAKING: Canada beats Russia 4-3 to win the gold medal at the WorldJuniors
Canada won he gold medal at the 2020 world junior hockey championship with a narrow 4-3 victory over Russia on Sunday.Nikita Alexandrov made it 1-0 Russia on a second-period power play, tipping a high shot from Yegor Zamula in front of the net. Officials reviewed the play for a possible high stick on Alexandrov, but eventually ruled it a good goal.
Dylan Cozens tied it up for Canada less than a minute later, on a five-on-three opportunity, as Russia was called on two simultaneous penalties immediately after opening the score. Grigori Denisenko restored the Russian lead with five minutes to go in the second on a gritty second-chance effort, as Canada’s goalie Joel Hofer left a loose puck right in front of the crease after an Alexander Romanov shot.
With Denisenko and Maxim Sorkin scoring to give Russia the 3-1 lead in the third period, Connor McMichael and Barret Hayton levelled the score before Thomas scored on a breakaway.
