New regulations will ban the sale and import of cosmetic products that rely on animal testing and also make it an offence for a company to falsely claim their products don't use animal testing.

Changes to the Food and Drugs Act were included in the government's omnibus budget bill, which received royal assent last week but won't come into force until December.

Cosmetic brands may have to disclose fragrance ingredients — a welcome change for Canadians with allergies "We haven't been doing animal testing for years," Praznik said. "I think it's really symbolic, though, that we recognize it in law." Minister of Health Jean-Yves Duclos says Canada's ban on animal testing will give Canadians confidence that their cosmetics are cruelty-free.

But once the industry group began collaborating with animal rights' groups, he said, they were able to come up with a list of principles that worked for them both, allowing Health Canada to draft the bill.
