The remedies proposed by the IMF and the West had deepened the recession and poverty in many of the countries. Martin urged Summers to think about a new multilateral organization that could allow the most important regional economies from the global south to have more say in how to handle these global financial crises. At minimum, Martin urged Summers to consider how the G7 could be expanded to create a larger group of financial ministers from the global south.
