Environment and Climate Change Canada says records were set for three days in a row, mainly because of heat waves in B.C. and Quebec.
B.C. records were set Thursday in Gibsons, Hope, Langley, the Malahat area, Powell River, Smithers, Qualicum Beach, and Squamish. The two highest temperatures were set in Squamish at 31. 6 C, up from a record 29 C in 2017 and in Smithers at 32.7 C, beating 30 C set in 1966, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Hartt said more records could be smashed over the next couple of days as heat warnings remained in effect Friday for several parts of B.C., including the Central Coast, Fort Nelson, the Fraser Canyon, and the Watson Lake areas. Globally, Jingxing, China, hit 43.3 C, and the Antarctica was 4.5 C above normal this week. Some parts of Europe also baked in unusually high temperatures with more expected this weekend. Germany’s weather agency, DWD, for example, has predicted highs of 37 C on Sunday.
“The long term trend is clear … Greenhouse gases and human influence are increasing the risk,” he said.Article content
