This article explores the historical and political differences between Canada and the United States, contrasting their founding principles and resulting systems of governance.
In 1961, John F. Kennedy looked to Canada and declared: “Geography has made us neighbours. History has made us friends. Economics has made us partners. And necessity has made us allies. Those whom nature has so joined together, let no man put asunder.”
History hasn’t just made us friends, however. It also underscores how different Canada and the United States are, in both important and unimportant ways. The American model clearly works. It has fuelled the most powerful economic engine in history, and every other country, in this and in the last century, has been playing catch-up. The United States has attracted immigrants from every corner of the globe, and is now home to nearly 350 million residents. Entrepreneurs do not have to search far for a market to sell their products and services. They only need to look at home, where the rules and regulations are consistent and easily understood.
They soon realized, however, that the only way they could do so was to strike an alliance with the French population. They would embrace British-inspired institutions to forge a different political and cultural setting than the one in the United States. The objective: building a continental nation designed to resist the natural north-south economic pull.
