Some are suggesting the aid of technology in this pursuit. But is it all snake oil? Or, can you actually use tech to find your Zen?
With devices becoming smaller in size, easier to use and cheaper to manufacture, the demonstrable science behind meditation and mindfulness is moving into the mainstream — thereby making these practices more understandable. “Most people are very comfortable relating to their phones or computers, more comfortable even than being in a relationship with themselves,” Leonard said. “This can create an easier on-ramp for people to access meditation and mindfulness, rather than diving right into the deep end of being just with their sensations, emotions, thoughts and the environment.”The implications of tech-assisted meditation and mindfulness depend greatly on how the technology is used.
“In some ways, using tech to fast track your way to Zen is more powerful, but it is also more challenging to integrate into everyday life,” he said. “If your relationship with meditating evolves organically, little by little, the insights that arise along the way can also be integrated, little by little, which I think is healthier.”
