Can lava kill the coronavirus?

Microbes populate that freshly manufactured oceanic crust too, as well as the deep-sea hydrothermal vents that crop up near the more magmatically active parts of the seafloor. Many are known as thermophiles: microbes that live their best life in unfathomably hot environments by human standards.

It was long suspected that an environment hotter than the boiling point of water would prove lethal for even the hardiest of microbes, but strain 121 shows that this isn’t quite true. Temperatures in excess of 212 degrees Fahrenheit are fine for certain microbes so long as the water isn’t physically boiling. At the 1.4-mile depths that strain 121 calls home, the weight of the water above it, which permits its survival.
