market in terms of size, institutions, talent and rapid growth, alongside Nashville and Atlanta. CBRE reports that the region posted a 17% gain in life sciences jobs in North Texas since 2019. That pace is nearly 4 percentage points faster than the national growth rate of life science employment.

A centerpiece in the bid is UT Southwestern, which ranks first in Texas for commercializing biomedical technologies and has delivered hundreds of patents, thousands of innovations and licenses and spawned dozens of startup companies. But the home to Nobel Prize researchers is not alone.

Despite widespread support from North Texas’ congressional delegation, the Dallas-Austin-San Antonio collaboration likely will face stiff bids from Chicago, Silicon Valley, the Research Triangle in North Carolina and a Houston coalition that has Texas Medical Center at its core. Nor is locating a hub here a guarantee that this region will have an upper hand in competitive funding.

Nonetheless, this competition is a unique opportunity for biomedical and life science organizations to partner across Texas to improve health outcomes, while also elevating the visibility of our robust life science and health care networks. The region has an impressive life sciences story to tell, and the Dallas-Austin-San Antonio proposal deserves strong consideration from the Biden administration.
