SaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for November 7, 2023 | SaltWireSTRATFORD, P.E.I. — Kelly Dowling has been hearing a lot of concerns from Islanders recently about the possibility of allowing ATV users on the Confederation Trail.
Kelly Dowling with the P.E.I. ATV Federation says she’s been engaging in conversations about the concerns shared by other trail users regarding the possibility of allowing ATV users on the Confederation Trail. - Thinh Nguyen/SaltWire “Those kinds of vehicles can create ruts. And we've already seen evidence of some of that in some places, that they make it much more difficult and more dangerous to cycle over it or to walk even,” he said.
Bober also expressed concerns about the potential impact on P.E.I.'s tourism industry as the Confederation Trail is popular among cycling and walking enthusiasts, attracting visitors to the Island. Jody Jackson, who is president of the P.E.I. ATV Federation, acknowledges these concerns. He said the federation intends to make it mandatory for members to avoid modified exhausts and encourage the use of electric ATVs for a more eco-friendly approach.
Jennie Pirch, who is a horse rider from Vernon River and member of the P.E.I. Trail Riders, said she hopes for minor expansions in areas where horses are allowed, particularly in less heavily used rural parts.
