Host Arielle Vandenberg and executive producer David Eilenberg reveal what to expect when the new version of LoveIsland hits the States
a reality-competition series that originally launched in the Netherlands, for nearly two decades. That show’s performance is a strong bellwether for the potential success of an AmericanThe series went into development about a year ago: “CBS [was] looking for a big swing in the genre that could fit the brand,” saidU.S. The British show, which has already been exported to countries like Germany and Australia, fit the bill.
“I don’t think Americans will understand what’s going on if that happens,” added Vandenberg in a separate interview. “[But] I hope more than anything that they’re still screaming, ‘Got a text!’” According to Eilenberg, viewers can also expect the new show to develop its own lingo.
Still, Eilenberg said, the network will try to keep the sexy ethos of the show alive. The raunchy competitions where contestants are forced to kiss or play very adult versions of charades, for instance, will still be present and accounted for. “The show is the show, so certainly we’re going to have a bevy of challenges,” Eilenberg said. Though some will be tweaked, others will remain the same: “There will be gross food challenges, which is still a part of the show that I have the least understanding of, but I’m all for it,” he added with a laugh. “People seem to love it.”may even attempt an improvement on the original model.
