US border agents refused entry to a truck carrying milk and over 1,000 bottles of spirits bound for Campobello Island under new trade war rules. The island's only year-round road link runs through Maine, and a temporary ferry route is set to end October 12.
American border agents stopped a truck bound for Campobello Island on Tuesday as it tried to enter the United States, refusing entry because it was carrying milk and more than 1,000 bottles of spirits.
The stop happened at the St. Stephen-Calais border crossing between New Brunswick and Maine. Importing those items into the United States is prohibited under new rules that took effect Tuesday as part of the ongoing trade war. The mayor of Campobello Island says he does not know what next steps look like after the truck was turned away. Nobody knows because ... we are dealing with another country, Harvey Matthews told CTV Your Morning on Friday.

Matthews Hopes Situation Resolves Soon
They do not have to let us do anything if they do not want to. Matthews said he received some confirmation on Thursday night that the situation might be resolved, but it is not a sure thing. I am hoping maybe after this afternoon we will not have to worry about it, he said. But if it is not, I do not know what we are going to do.
The only way to access Campobello Island year-round is by bridge via Lubec, Maine, which is about 80 kilometres by road from the border crossing. The truck holds a permit from U.S. Customs and Border Protection allowing it to transport imported goods over the border, according to the U.S. border agency. After being refused entry into the United States, the truck boarded a provincial government ferry to Deer Island, N.B.
, and from there took a privately run ferry to Campobello Island. He is on his regular runs as usual, but he just will not be able to bring those items, Matthews said of the truck driver. Vikas Vakkanti, manager of Campobello Value Foods, told CTV News Atlantic on Thursday that he estimated it costs 450 dollars to ship via ferry and that he would have to exclude dairy and alcohol from the shipments.
Mayor Contacts Premier About Ferry Extension
The private ferry is scheduled to cease operations for the season on Oct. 12 as it cannot handle rough winter crossings. Matthews said he has been in touch with New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt about extending the ferry operations to keep a viable shipment route open. I do not know if that is going to fix everything, he said, pointing to the cumbersome nature of the commute for the driver. But he is optimistic a resolution will come through.
It just seems like ... you go a few months and it is something else, he said. When is it ever going to end? A New Brunswick island accessible only through the United States is feeling the impact of new American restrictions on Canadian alcohol imports, as the community waits to learn whether a workaround can hold through the winter.
