The City of Campbell River says its activating a warming centre in response to the cold weather expected Sunday night.
Located at at the Campbell River Community Centre, the Warming Centre will be open from 10 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17 until 7 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 18.
“The Warming Centre is a life-saving emergency response that provides a warm, dry space where people experiencing homelessness can find respite from cold or extreme weather,” says Jeff Ford, Director of Community Safety., approximately 197 people were identified as experiencing homelessness in Campbell River, which marks a 66 per cent increase from the 2021 count.
The City can open a warming centre when temperatures reach -4°C or Environment Canada issues a weather statement predicting low temperatures, rainfall or storm events. Overnight in Campbell River on Nov. 17, rain is expected with temperatures hitting 3°C according toDuring the day, local support services are available.
“The Warming Centre is open to everyone for short-term stays. Visitors may bring pets on leashes and belongings, including bikes and carts. Hot drinks, snacks and seating will be available. However, beds will not be provided. The Warming Centre will be staffed by individuals who have experience working with people experiencing homelessness so that necessary support is available,” states the City.
Operated with funds from the province and the city, the Warming Centre is located at 401-11th Ave, at the Campbell River Community Centre.
