Cameron Latu’s conversion from outside linebacker to tight end at Alabama convinced the 49ers to draft him in the third round last week.
SANTA CLARA — Only 20 months ago, Cameron Latu had yet to score a touchdown in his Alabama career. He was relatively new on the scene, at least as a tight end, having converted from outside linebacker after his freshman year.“Before season, I said, ‘You know, I think you have a lot better shot to be a tight end. At least two 49ers won’t be strangers to Cameron Latu when he shows up for rookie minicamp this week. The other is George Kittle, who has been studied and modeled by Latu, especially over his past two seasons at Alabama. “He will intrigue the out of you in rookie minicamp, OTAs and training camp,” former 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan, now a freelance consultant, told The Athletic. “Because you’re going to see some of the athleticism. It’s pretty freakin’ cool. … That’s going to end up being a hell of a pick.”“I was on the phone with Talanoa right after I got drafted, so it is crazy,” Latu told reporters on draft day. “Me and him are going to turn up, for sure, and he’s going to make me better every day.
