When coronavirus spread across the country last month, Americans bought disinfecting supplies like bleach and wipes in bulk, but many may have been misusing them—the CDC reported that calls to poison centers increased sharply in March
Call rates were steady during January and February, but spiked starting in March.
The CDC researchers said it is not yet proven that cleaning to prevent the spread of COVID-19 was the cause, but “there appears to be a clear temporal association with increased use of these products.” Bleach was the biggest offender, but even hand sanitizers accounted for 36.7% of the increase in calls related to disinfectant exposure.Although ethanol-based hand sanitizers like Purell are safe to use externally, they can be dangerous to consume because of their high alcohol content. In one case, a preschool-aged child was taken to the emergency room with a blood alcohol level of 273 mg/dL, more than triple the legal driving limit for adults.
