When they look back on their incredibly productive years of practicing medicine, they both agree that makingSteeves grew up in Moncton in a working-class family.

“I did pre-med at Dal. I got accepted after my second year, so when I started medical school, I had just turned 19," he says. When Steeves was wrapping up his internship, another GP was leaving his practice and asked if Steeves wanted to take it over.Steeves and Hickey met in medical school – Steeves was two years ahead of Hickey – and, in the summer of 1974 when Hickey finished medical school, Steeves needed a break.“After the locum, I went to California skiing with friends. When I was there, I did some reflecting," says Hickey.

In the 90s, he got involved with methadone treatment, which was new at the time, and since 1974, he has been offering medical care to the people of Paqꞌtnkek First Nation.
