“It certainly did not live up to its billing by some who promised it would be our most important election since the end of World War Two,” Mulroney added, a reference to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s comments to kick off the election campaign in August.
“We need to navigate smartly and more nimbly to advance Canadian interests in what promises to be a more tumultuous, unpredictable world.” He added, “In the final analysis, leadership is not simply doing what you believe to be right; it is also doing it the right way. Successful leaders do not impose unpopular ideas on the public, successful leaders make unpopular ideas acceptable to the nation.”
The speech is the second time in days that a former prime minister has been back in the news. Over the weekend, Jean Chrétien — who is touring to promote his new book — said he believed Trudeau would be “better served” by consulting with some of his party’s previous generation of leaders.
