A powerful wildfire fueled by strong Santa Ana winds ravaged a Los Angeles hillside, causing widespread damage and evacuations.

A wildfire fueled by extreme Santa Ana winds raced through a Los Angeles hillside known for its celebrity homes on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, destroying residences and forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people. Roads were blocked, prompting some residents to flee on foot, abandoning their vehicles. California Governor Gavin News om, who was in Southern California for a national monument dedication by President Joe Biden, diverted to the canyon to witness the fire's impact firsthand.

He reported finding 'many structures already destroyed,' though officials did not provide a precise count. About 30,000 residents were under evacuation orders, and more than 13,000 structures were at risk. The fire, which began around 10:30 a.m., coincided with a dangerous Santa Ana windstorm predicted to be the strongest in over a decade. The cause remained unknown, and no injuries had been reported. The winds were expected to intensify overnight and persist for several days, bringing isolated gusts exceeding 100 mph (160 kph) in mountainous and foothill regions, many of which had experienced little rain in months. Newsom warned residents that 'by no stretch of the imagination are we out of the woods,' anticipating the strongest winds between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday. He declared a state of emergency. As of Tuesday evening, 28,300 households were without power due to the strong winds, and approximately 15,000 utility customers in Southern California had their power shut off to minimize the risk of equipment igniting wildfires
