If the bill passes – and it’s already been ordered into its third reading, after getting a “yes” vote from twelve Democratic senators and one Republican – it could apply as soon as the 2023 taxation year. It was sponsored by, a Los-Angeles-based advocacy group that is working to promote dedicated bus lanes, protected bicycle lanes, and improved sidewalks for pedestrians.

“As the impacts of climate change are felt across our state, it’s time we more aggressively commit to implementing modes of sustainable transportation,” Portantino said in a press release. “We can invest in the future by providing financial incentives for Californians to transition from vehicles to more sustainable options.”Article content

The tax credit bill isn’t Portantino’s only effort. He has introduced other bills, also making their way through the legal system, to create street designs that benefit cyclists and pedestrians as well as drivers; and a crackdown on excessively loud exhaust systems.owning a car isn’t available to Canadians, those in Alberta and British Columbia with vehicles not worth keeping can get something back out of them through the non-profit organization Scrap-It.
