Calgary 'the place to be' for hail researchers expanding project in second year of study yyc
The hail project says the new monitoring network spread across Calgary will provide “unparalleled data” to its teams, and there are few like it in the world. The 20 stations utilizerecord “everything” — wind speed, wind direction, precipitation, pressure, temperature, humidity and even the frequency of nearby lightning strikes, all of which are important factors for researchers to look at.
Jay Lesyk from the Western Engineering severe storm survey team, displays a number of drones and electronic equipment used in researching hail storms on July 20, 2023.“We want to learn more about hail and wind, because if it’s windy like it was during the Calgary hailstorm, that imparts more energy on the hailstones and makes them travel faster. When they’re travelling faster, they have more impact energy and that causes more damage,” he said.
“Once we identify a storm of interest that looks like it’s going to be pretty severe, we start kind of going there behind the storm,” said field co-ordinator Devon Healy. “We don’t want to let it hit us because we’re not prepared for a storm if it were to hit us.” “It doesn’t really exist, what we’re doing,” said researcher and graduate student Francis Lavigne-Theriault. “Drone technology is evolving every year, and we’re using the latest technology and the most fancy drones and the most fancy sensors. We’re trying to fill the gaps in the research where people are not really doing these things. So we want to publish that so people can go off our methodology and advance science.
