There were a lot of things that the Calgary Stampeders defence did right against the Saskatchewan Roughriders a few weeks ago.
They got in Riders QB Trevor Harris’ face, taking him down a few times and limiting how much time he had to work for most of the game.Jamal Morrow, in particular, had a massive day on the ground for the Riders. He busted out of the backfield and ran the ball 22 times for 133 yards.
And the Stamps are well aware that can’t happen again if they’re going to have any chance of getting some revenge for their Week 3 loss when they take on the Riders in Regina on Saturday night. “They ran the ball on second-and-seven, second-and-13,” Stamps linebacker Micah Awe said. “They’re running the ball in these awkward situations, kind of-type-plays, and it worked. Me and Morrow shook each other’s hands, said good battle, and it’s going to be another good battle this time. It’s not just me and Morrow, it’s the whole defence and everyone.
“We know they’re going to run the ball, just like we knew Winnipeg was going to run the ball, and we’re just going to try to focus on that. Stop the run and after that just let the athletes go.” Both teams are going to make adjustments for this weekend’s pivotal game – yes, it’s still early in the season, but a win would give the Riders the head-to-head season tie-breaker – so it’s entirely possible that the Riders may not rely quite as heavily on their run game.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
