Calgary Stampeders defeated Ottawa Redblacks 45-31 in the CFL, keeping playoff hopes alive while Ottawa remains winless at 0-14.
The Calgary Stampeders defeated the Ottawa Redblacks 45-31 in a CFL game on Saturday. The win improved Calgary to 7-8 and kept their playoff hopes alive, while Ottawa fell to 0-14, remaining winless this season.
Stampeders Offense Shines in Victory
Deonta McMahon scored two touchdowns for Calgary, one rushing and one receiving. Tevin Jones and Clark Barnes each caught touchdown passes, and Tyreik McAllister added a rushing touchdown.
Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. completed 24 of 30 pass attempts for 422 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. His performance helped Calgary lead the entire game.
Calgary opened the scoring on their first drive. Adams threw 45 yards to Barnes to reach Ottawa's 12-yard line, then connected with McMahon for a touchdown.
In the second quarter, McAllister scored on a 28-yard rush, and McMahon ran four yards for his second touchdown. Anthony Johnson intercepted Ottawa's McLeod Bethel-Thompson after McMahon's score.
Ottawa got on the board before halftime when Bethel-Thompson ended a 75-yard, eight-play drive with a 13-yard catch and run to Ayden Eberhardt for a touchdown.
Calgary added to their lead in the third quarter when Jones caught a 15-yard scoring pass in the final seconds. Ottawa scored twice in the fourth quarter and converted a two-point attempt by Justin Hardy with less than five minutes left, but could not complete the comeback.
Redblacks Extend Record Losing Streak
Ottawa's loss extends their losing streak to 20 straight games, a modern-day CFL record, dating back to last September. The Redblacks remain the only winless team in the league this season.
Bethel-Thompson, in his second straight start, completed 30 of 47 pass attempts for 418 yards and two touchdowns, but was intercepted once. Justin Hardy and Ayden Eberhardt had touchdown catches, and Mario Anderson Jr. scored a rushing touchdown for Ottawa.
Despite the offensive output, Ottawa could not overcome Calgary's early lead. The Redblacks have now lost all 14 games this season.
Playoff Implications and Kicking Performances
Calgary kicker Rene Paredes made field goals from 40, 49, and 43 yards and added five convert points. Ottawa's Brett Lauther was successful from 13, 56, and 28 yards and added two converts.
The previous week, Calgary needed a 62-yard field goal by Paredes to beat the visiting Redblacks at McMahon Stadium.
In the West Division, Calgary is tied for fourth with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at 14 points each. A crossover playoff berth is in play.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-10) ranked third in the East heading into Saturday night's game against the Edmonton Elks. The fourth-place team in the West can cross over and take a playoff berth from the third-place team in the East if it has more points at the end of the regular season.
Calgary's victory keeps them in contention for a postseason spot, while Ottawa's struggles continue.
