“Heroes go a long way to inspiring the next generation, to getting the word out that Canadians can achieve a podium,” said Mike Bodnarchuk, co-chair of Ski Jumping Canada. “From our little club in Calgary, we have achieved the top of the world in our sport. Hopefully people will see we have a great program.
By necessity, Loutitt does most of her training and competing outside Canada. She and the rest of the four-member Canadian women’s national team live most of each year in Slovenia, where they are coached by Janko Zwitter. They travel the World Cup circuit mostly through Europe and Asia, and only on occasion do they get to North America, as there are working jumps in Whistler, B.C., Park City, Utah and Lake Placid, N.Y.
She will no doubt gain a ton of confidence from this victory; knowing that all the top jumpers save for injured Slovenian Ursa Bogataj and Norway’s Maren Lundby were competing. “Now Ale has surpassed Sara and that’s a big deal for her mentally and in keeping that momentum going,” said Stretch. “And honestly, I think they’re just getting started.”
