The City of Calgary is initiating a functional planning study for a 4-kilometer extension of the Red Line LRT, aiming to provide transit access to several growing communities south of the ring road. The project is expected to take several years to materialize, but it is seen as essential for accommodating the region's rapid population growth.
The City of Calgary is currently seeking public input as it prepares to launch a functional planning study for a proposed 4-kilometer extension of the Red Line Light Rail Transit ( LRT ). This extension would see the CTrain line, currently terminating at Somerset-Bridlewood, extend southward, crossing Calgary 's south ring road and reaching as far as 210th Avenue S.
The project aims to provide CTrain access to several communities, including Silverado, Belmont, Pine Creek, Chaparral, Walden, and Legacy, as well as future developments situated southwards along Macleod Trail. The study, a necessary step before moving into the design phase and securing funding grants, will investigate various aspects of the extension. These include the optimal alignment for the track, the location and design of the two new stations, accessibility to transit service, connections to bus terminals, the feasibility of park-and-ride facilities, and the required land acquisition. Coun. Peter Demong, whose Ward 14 would be partially served by the proposed extension, acknowledges that construction is likely years away, potentially taking 10 to 30 years depending on market conditions and funding availability.Despite the long-term timeline, Demong emphasizes the project's importance in accommodating the region's rapid population growth. He notes that when he was first elected in 2010, the community of Legacy didn't even exist, but it is now nearly fully developed, with an estimated population of over 85,000 residing south of the ring road. This extension aims to address the growing need for transit in these burgeoning communities. Furthermore, Demong points to the proposed light rail vehicle maintenance and storage facility at the 210th Avenue terminus as a potential catalyst for the project's prioritization. As the CTrain system expands, particularly with the implementation of four-car trains, a dedicated facility for storing and maintaining these vehicles will become increasingly crucial
