“But the reality is that the sheer numbers of students are overwhelming everyone. You have kids going into one school, then that becomes full, so you overflow them into another, then that becomes full,” Cattoni said.Article content Calgary Board of Education officials are expecting more than 7,000 new students this fall, a number that could get higher as more refugees arrive daily at the CBE Welcome Centre, which supports them through language assessments and program placements throughout the system.
Support for newcomers through LEAD — Literacy, English and Academic Development — has also been expanded this year, adding additional classes with a total of 11 schools now offering the program.
