The Calgary Humane Society reports being at capacity, prompting city council to seek solutions. Selling pet dogs, cats, and rabbits in retail stores is under review in Calgary, with the possibility of a ban.
Council voted to direct city administration to prepare a report examining these sales, considering a ban, public education campaigns, advocacy to the provincial government, or updates to municipal bylaws. Councillor Courtney Walcott initiated the review, citing the high number of pet surrenders due to capacity issues at shelters and the impact of the housing crisis and economic pressures on pet owners. He also expressed concern about growing feral populations and the potential risks they face, along with the conditions of some kennels and breeders. The council vote was 12-2 in favor of the report, which is expected by the fourth quarter of 2025
