Alberta is implementing an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program in April, which will require companies to pay for the recycling of their products. As a result, Calgary city council is considering lowering the monthly Blue Cart Program fee.
Alberta is set to introduce a new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program in April, shifting the financial burden of recycling from consumers to companies. This change is expected to lead to a decrease in Calgary residents' monthly Blue Cart Program fees. City council is considering lowering the current fee of $9.34 to $2.17.Coun. Peter Demong, a long-time advocate for EPR, has been pushing for this program for nearly eight years.
He believes it's a win-win situation, benefiting the environment, the economy, and taxpayers. Studies have shown that EPR programs can significantly increase recycling rates, reduce landfill waste, and encourage producers to adopt more sustainable packaging practices. The EPR program will require companies to take responsibility for the recycling of their packaging and paper products, as well as hazardous and special products like batteries, pesticides, and flammable, corrosive, or toxic materials. This means producers will have to pay for the collection and processing of their waste. The program will also create a consistent list of recyclable materials across Alberta, simplifying the recycling process for residents. Currently, recycling regulation and oversight are handled by city councils, but the EPR program will transfer this responsibility to the provincial government. After being discussed by the community development committee on Thursday, the transition to EPR will go to a city council meeting later in February to prepare for the province's implementation in April
