Two Calgary men face charges after an RCMP investigation into fraudulent vehicle registrations uncovered three stolen vehicles, including a Lexus SUV and two Toyota SUVs.
Two Calgary men are facing charges following an RCMP investigation into fraudulent vehicle registrations that led authorities to recover several stolen vehicles, including a Lexus SUV and two newer model Toyota SUVs. The investigation began in July after the southern Alberta district crime reduction unit discovered a series of phony registrations, according to authorities in Alberta.
The RCMP said a further check determined the fake registrations were connected to a group of suspects in northeast Calgary. That connection soon led investigators to locate an illegally registered Lexus SUV in the city.
Police also found two newer model Toyota SUVs in British Columbia that had been fraudulently registered. All three vehicles are believed to have been stolen, police said.
Fraudulent Vehicle Registration Investigation Expands
The case highlights how fraudulent registration documents can be used to obscure the ownership of stolen vehicles across provincial lines. The investigation began with the discovery of multiple phony registrations in southern Alberta before expanding to suspects in northeast Calgary.
From there, the inquiry stretched into British Columbia, where the two Toyota SUVs were located. The Lexus SUV was found in Calgary. Each vehicle had been registered illegally, according to the RCMP.
Police have not released details about how the fraudulent registrations were obtained or how many people may ultimately be connected to the scheme. The investigation remains focused on the group of suspects identified in northeast Calgary.
Two Men Arrested and Charged
On Sept. 2, RCMP officers, with assistance from the Calgary Police Service, arrested two men in connection with the case. Each suspect faces three counts of use, trafficking or possession of a forged document.
The names of the accused have not been released by authorities. Both men are expected to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on Oct. 20.
The charges relate to the forged documents allegedly used in the fraudulent registration of the vehicles. The RCMP has not said whether additional charges or arrests are expected.
Stolen Vehicles Recovered in Two Provinces
The recovery of the three vehicles spanned two provinces, with the Lexus found in Calgary and the two Toyota SUVs located in British Columbia. All three are believed to be stolen, police said.
The investigation remains active as authorities continue to examine the scope of the fraudulent registration operation. The southern Alberta district crime reduction unit initially uncovered the phony registrations in July, setting off a months-long inquiry.
Residents with information about fraudulent vehicle registrations or stolen vehicles are encouraged to contact their local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers. Authorities have not indicated whether more suspects are being sought.
