Usually, gardens aren’t built overnight. Often, they are multi\u002Dyear projects, and even if a garden is built in a season, it evolves with time. It’s a process…
There are many ways to journal. The right way is the one that gets you to note what you’re doing and lets you revisit the notes when you are ready to work on your garden plan.
Can you start a garden journal in the middle of the growing season? Yes! Mid-summer, most gardeners are working on maintaining their gardens — weeding, watering, fertilizing, deadheading, and observing. It’s a time when walking around and checking on the garden’s progress is encouraged. It will be obvious if something did not perform as expected and plants performing well will be sending out siren calls for you to look at them.
Building a habit of journaling and strengthening observation skills takes a bit of practice, too. Because trying to capture everything happening in the garden can be overwhelming, the Society suggests new journal keepers select a plant or container for observations and, every day, write a note about it in their journal. What pollinators are visiting? Is the soil dry at the surface or depth? Take a photograph of it every week, then compare the photos.
