Calgary-Glenmore MLA Nagwan Al-Guneid says she will not seek re-election in the next provincial vote, ending a term that began with a 2023 win for the NDP.

Calgary-Glenmore MLA Nagwan Al-Guneid has announced she will not seek re-election in the next provincial vote. Al-Guneid, who was elected in 2023, made the decision public in a letter to constituents in her Calgary riding. The New Democratic Party MLA serves as shadow minister for energy and minerals.

She said the decision came after a great deal of thought and reflection. Al-Guneid added that she plans to continue serving Albertans in a different capacity. She also said she will serve out the remainder of her current term.

Al-Guneid Reflects on Calgary-Glenmore Term

In her letter to constituents, Al-Guneid said representing the riding has been the honour of a lifetime. She described her time in office as one of the most humbling experiences of her life. The MLA first entered politics after about 15 years working in the energy sector.

Her background in energy shaped her role in the legislature. As shadow minister for energy and minerals, she became a prominent voice for the NDP on resource and economic files. Her expertise was frequently cited by party colleagues during debates on Alberta energy policy.

Al-Guneid won the Calgary-Glenmore riding in 2023, flipping a constituency long considered a conservative stronghold. She defeated United Conservative Party candidate Whitney Issik in that race. The victory was part of a broader NDP push in Calgary during the 2023 provincial election.

NDP Leader Thanks Energy Shadow Minister

NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi thanked Al-Guneid for her contributions to the party. He said her expertise helped shape the party plans for Alberta energy sector and economic future. Nenshi comments came as the party prepares for the next provincial campaign.

Al-Guneid decision means the NDP will need a new candidate in Calgary-Glenmore. The riding has drawn attention in recent elections as a battleground between the NDP and the United Conservative Party. Her departure adds to the list of MLA changes expected before the next vote.

She said she will continue to serve Albertans in a different capacity after her term ends. The timing of her departure from electoral politics remains tied to the end of the current legislative session. No date has been set for the next provincial election.
