Calgary Expo: Movie chameleon Vincent D'Onofrio embraces comic-book culture and superhero universe as Kingpin yyc

He first played the ruthless crime lord Kingpin, or Winston Fisk, in Netflix’s dark take on Daredevil, which ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2018. D’Onofrio reprised the role for a few episodes of the Disney+ miniseries, Hawkeye with Jeremy Renner. He will also appear later this year as the character in the Disney+ Marvel Universe series Echo. In 2024, he will be back in the Disney+ reboot Daredevil: Born Again which will see Charlie Cox return in the title role.

“He is a pretty iconic character,” he says. “That in itself stands alone as a really cool thing to be able to represent. I’ve been lucky enough to do that. But also it was the approach of the Netflix show. All the Marvel stuff was pretty new. I was a big fan of Iron Man. I think did such a great job on that. I think it made a lot of people, including me, see that there was a way to do this that wasn’t corny. Those two really made it work.

D’Onofrio reportedly put on 70 pounds to play the role, earning him an early reputation as an actor capable of remarkable transformations. Since then, he has rarely repeated himself.

As for fan conventions, D’Onofrio is relatively new to the experience and it has been eye-opening for the actor. He will participate in a panel on Saturday alongside his Daredevil co-star Charlie Cox.
