Discovery House, a Calgary emergency shelter for families fleeing domestic violence, has been hit by flooding twice in recent weeks, forcing the shelter to relocate residents and face extensive repairs.

A Calgary emergency shelter, Discovery House, is facing a major setback after being hit by flooding twice in recent weeks. Burst pipes caused the flooding, resulting in extensive damage to the building's first and second floors. The shelter, which houses over a dozen families fleeing domestic violence, is now scrambling to find new accommodations for its residents.

Discovery House, which provides a total of 19 units, including three- and four-bedroom apartments, has been significantly impacted. Six families, including 21 children, have already been relocated to temporary housing. However, staff are working tirelessly to find new homes for the remaining families who will need to be moved out of their damaged units. The flooding has caused emotional distress for residents, like Fatima, who lived at the shelter with her three children for a month. Fatima described the shelter as a comfortable and friendly haven, where her children felt safe and supported. She expressed sadness at having to leave, but acknowledged that the situation was beyond her control. The shelter's executive director, Leslie Hill, shared the residents' feelings, stating that the staff are deeply passionate about providing a healing space for their clients and seeing it disrupted is devastating. Unfortunately, the shelter is facing a long and costly repair process. The total cost is still unknown, but extensive work is needed to replace damaged drywall, floors, ceilings, and other infrastructure. The shelter is over 20 years old and, due to its constant use, requires significant maintenance. Some families may need to transition out permanently as repairs for their apartments take longer. Discovery House, which assists approximately 600 people annually, is hopeful that enough repairs can be completed to allow some families to return next week. The community has shown support, but Hill acknowledges that there will be many unforeseen expenses. Donations are welcomed and can be made through the shelter's website.
