Calgary doctor leads campaign for federal policy on free birth control yyc

ProjectEmpowHER — spearheaded by Dr. Rupinder Toor, founder and medical director of the IUD and N.E. Female Health Clinic — is pushing for Canada-wide legislation allowing free access not just for its societal benefits, but also the economics.“Reproductive rights are not men’s rights, women’s rights, or youth rights — they are human rights. And they cannot be left to the whim of changing provincial governments. They must be protected on a federal level,” Toor said.

“In Canada, when a woman is faced with an unintended pregnancy, she has two choices. She can terminate that pregnancy, which is costly, or she can choose to carry on with the pregnancy, which is also very costly.” According to EmpowHER, studies have shown every $1 invested in publicly provided contraception results in up to nine times the total cost savings across the public sector.

British Columbia started offering free prescription birth control in April, with similar policies being considered elsewhere in Canada.
