As the holiday season approaches, Calgary charities are facing increased demand for household items. The Salvation Army, Goodwill, and Women in Need Society (WINS) are all urging community members to donate items such as kitchen appliances, furniture, and electronics.

He said some shelves are empty because inventory is waning as Calgarians appear to require more than what the Salvation Army locations in the city can provide. The Salvation Army says it needs more donations of household kitchen items, such as cutlery and microwaves. "People like to use them to end of life or store them in the cupboard. And the problem is, people can't afford those comforts and those necessities."
Mattresses are the most sought-after donation item from WINS. Ramchuk said the charity won't accept mattresses that are stained, soiled or torn, but encouraged people who have spare mattresses to donate them.A spokesperson for Goodwill told CBC News the charity saw a surge in donations of household goods near the beginning of the year, however they have levelled out compared with data from last year.
He said it's heartening to see how much getting a turkey on Thanksgiving means to the people he meets.
