Teachers upset by expectations for voluntary work, issues over leave days, consultation on calendar, staffing and substitute teacher pay
The union said 27 other divisions across the province have settled so far. She said the division has listened to their issues but have not been willing to budge on these points of contention through eight sessions with the mediator.
The top issue among members was the expectation of voluntary work, which includes coaching school sports teams and running clubs and other extra-curricular activities. McCaffrey said teachers can face being forced out of a school if they refuse to volunteer in these capacities.
McCaffrey also said teachers want a voice in determining the school calendar, which they currently do not have. Meanwhile, administration also deals with having to work on some scheduled days off. McCaffrey emphasized their intention is to get back to the bargaining table with a mediator. If a deal is not worked out by the end of July, it will set the stage for the mediator to “write out” of the dispute, which will bring a two-week, cooling-off period. At this point the ATA would be able to request a strike vote, which could have teachers hit the picket lines in mid- to late-August, putting the start of next school year in jeopardy.
“The Calgary Catholic School District greatly appreciates all the hard work of our teachers and staff,” said an emailed statement by a division spokesperson. “CCSD will continue to respectfully work towards a fair settlement for all and prays for a peaceful resolution.”
