Calgary Blizzard claim women's title in League1 Alberta's inaugural soccer series yyc

“It’s homegrown players who have a lot of pride in the badge that they wear.”

In the finale to conclude the summer exhibition series billed as the first season for League1 Alberta, it was the visiting Blizzard scoring the opening goal — in the 38th minute by Alyssa D’Agnone with the ball going off an Impact defender. The second 45 minutes didn’t decide a winner. In the shootout, the teams went seven shooters deep with each team scoring four times before Houghton — a former University of Calgary Dinos star and pro with Iceland’s UMF Grindavik — became the hero.

“Typically, you don’t put a goalkeeper in for penalty kicks,” Raposo said. “Maybe as your last shooter, I’d say, for most teams. But knowing Lauren’s quality and that she wanted to take one, she took the seventh PK and scored and, obviously, then saved the next one. So she’s a bit of a stud.” It was a revenge game for the Blizzard, since they were unable to defeat the Impact in the regular season of the series, drawing 0-0 and losing 3-0.

“I think it was the reaction from that I think I’m the most proud of,” added Raposo. “The girls really connected and really focused on kind of ourselves and making sure that we found a way to get a result. I think that was the biggest piece. It was less about the quality of the game or how good we played. More that it was a final and we were just trying to find a way to win — and we’re able to do that.
