The draft, potential trades, free agency \u002D Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving has lots on his plate as his first month on the job ends.
As well, there’s the vacancy on the coaching staff that was created when Spencer Carbery departed to take the job of head coach of the Washington Capitals. An assistant also could be announced this week.
Treliving will have to strike a balance — the urgency to win now continues to grow, but at the same time, Dubas didn’t leave a cupboard full of top prospects when he was fired on May 19. And there is no guarantee the player chosen 28th eventually will make an impact in the NHL.With the draft constraints placed on Treliving as part of the hiring process after he and the Calgary Flames agreed to part ways in April, Leafs director of amateur scouting Wes Clark will direct the Leafs’ table.
The Leafs have $9.1-million in cap space, a sum that grows to $14.7-million if defenceman Jake Muzzin is put on long-term injured reserve. It’s not a lot of cash in the MLSE wallet, considering Treliving has to add, at least, five depth forwards. The pool grows if the Leafs rid themselves of goalie Matt Murray and his $4.6-million cap hit.Article content
