Some tenants have found accommodation with family, but more than 30 have been moved into hotels, MacAulay said. Salus booked additional rooms in the hotels so that staff can be available for the displaced tenants. Between Friday and Sunday, Ottawa firefighters responded to 42 calls for water leaks, said spokesperson Nick DeFazio. The actual number was probably much higher since some calls would have come in as fire alarms triggered when the sprinkler system goes off.Article contentAlarm bells were ringing Sunday morning when fire crews were called to 167 Sparks St., where they found water cascading inside Esthetics by Lucie from a broken overhead pipe.

One call came at 2 a.m. Saturday from a hotel on Queen Street where an overhead pipe on the second floor had burst, flooding the second, first and basement levels. The room wasn’t occupied so the heat had been turned down low, he said. “When a pipe freezes, nothing happens until it starts to thaw. That’s when the water starts to flow again.”Article content

“They may be out hosing down their furniture from the winter and not realize that there’s a leak and the water is also flowing down inside the wall and into their basement,” he said. “And basements aren’t basements anymore. They’re living spaces with big screen TVs and expensive furniture.”
