Burnley have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Dutch Under-21 international Ian Maatsen on a season-long loan,Paperwork for the deal still needs to be finalised but the 20-year-old is expected in the North West on Thursday to undergo a medical and, if all goes to plan, the move should be completed by the weekend.
Maatsen spent the 2021-22 campaign at Coventry City and was targeted by a host of clubs in the UK and abroad, but new Burnley manager Vincent Kompany convinced him on a move to Turf Moor. Kompany will have been attracted by Maatsen’s versatility but is set to use him at left-back as the Belgian coach prepares his side for life outside the Premier League following their relegation in May.
The highly-rated Maatsen, who joined Chelsea in 2018, is contracted at Stamford Bridge until 2024 and there is an option to extend by a further year.
