'I could not stand the noise anymore,' said one resident, who moved away in 2016.

That’s no surprise to Evelyne Rotella, who used to live on Fairland Court, one street over from Wakely Court, where some homes were involved with the testing.“The worse part was in the middle of the night when they had to clean the track. It was really bad when the trains were going full speed and then had to stop.”

She remembers even back then that neighbours were talking about writing and signing letters to get attention. “I don’t understand why they didn’t put up a fence then. It took me six months to sell because of that.”One resident whose family has lived on Wakely Court for decades said she’s written many letters to TransLink to complain specifically about the buzzing of trains stalled between stations at night. However, she didn’t want to bring attention to her property and declined to be named.

Aside from considering current noise levels, the city’s study, which was conducted by Vancouver-based BKL Consultants, examined the effects of projected traffic growth for the next 10 years. The city’s planning department advised that daily road traffic volumes would increase by two per cent per year over the next decade.

BKL said that noise barriers or walls of various heights — from 2.4 metres to five metres — would decrease the noise level for residents and it would take a five-metre-tall noise barrier to decrease levels to meet criteria in one section of the study area. Noise barriers are typically made of reinforced concrete, aluminum or steel posts, panels and a cap rail.
