A new non-profit initiative called Building Material Exchange (BMEx) is working to reduce construction waste on Vancouver Island by connecting companies and facilitating the exchange of excess or salvaged materials.

Gil Yaron, managing director of circulation innovation at Light House, is leading a non-profit venture called Building Material Exchange (BMEx) to encourage recycling of construction waste on Vancouver Island . He describes BMEx as the 'Tinder of the construction sector,' aiming to connect companies and facilitate the exchange of excess or salvaged materials. BMEx recently hosted events in Nanaimo and Victoria, bringing together over 150 development industry leaders to foster partnerships.

The program, funded by regional districts, is free to join and will launch an online marketplace in early 2025. This unique Canadian initiative seeks to reduce landfill waste and promote sustainable practices in the construction industry
