But the real scuttlebutt in the lock up is the hunt for clues about where the party is going to be… No, notparty. Where is the PMO and Finance inner circle gathering for drinks tonight? The first few minutes of the lockup, when journalistic deadlines are still hours away and no one can leave, is apparently when FOMO takes over. Once the social calendar is sorted, journalists, stakeholders, and MPs start reading.
I have no idea where they unwind after the budget speech now, but “in my day,” in Centre Block, we huddled in the Speaker’s chambers behind the House of Commons. This is a surreal experience heightened by the outdated décor and the stress of impending limelight of the media scrutiny. At that point, the finance minister would hear about how the budget was received in lockup, what tricky questions had been asked and reminded what pitfalls to avoid.
As others have remarked, we were treated to a different roll-out of budgetary priorities this year. The government has done away with the cloak and dagger routine of budgets past and has opted to lay out its priorities over the course of several weeks. But what we have seen rolled out are the broad strokes of the story they are setting out to tell. We have seen the communications roll-out. We have only scratched the surface.
