The BTWN’s wins are many, reaching all subsets of fashion. Yet the agency's quick rise to success doesn’t negate the challenges this industry has placed before them. Outdated ideals on beauty, hateful and alienating on-set moments, and unfair pay and treatment still run wild to this day. While the industry may be changing, it’s far from perfect, and that fact is all the more reason as to why Jane’s work touches so many.
What Jane’s seen over the years is that while more brands are interested in casting diverse talent for national rollouts and visible campaign work, diversity lacks greatly when it comes to more “every day” gigs. Curve, LGBTQ+, and models of color are regularly asked to speak to their experiences through unrequested when their identity is less beneficial . Tokenism runs rampant as inclusivity becomes increasingly mainstream and buzzy.
Another issue: Pay disparities among marginalized models, and sets that still aren’t welcoming of all. “Budget and on-set treatment of models are still areas that come up in conversation with my talent a lot,” Jane says. “There’s still some work to do there, but certainly it’s headed in a much better direction. And that's reflective of more diversity in who these casting directors are, who's working on the brand side, and who's working on these marketing teams and everything.
Jane notes that she’s seen the most progress in the swimwear, lingerie, and beauty spaces. In regards to the latter, the BTWN has pushed to represent models with varying face shapes, not solely curve girls with angular facial features like other agencies may prioritize. Rather, the BTWN is not afraid to showcase and push models with double chins, round faces, and features that make them visibly plus-size from the neck up.
