Michelle Forbes’ Helena Cain brilliantly updated the Pegasus storyline from the original BSG for the moral complexities of the rebooted series.
Commander Cain was another classic Battlestar Galactica character who had their gender flipped for the reboot, making them one of the best characters in Ronald D. Moore's revival. In the original Battlestar, Cain was played by Lloyd Bridges and clashed with Commander Adama over the best way to deal with the Cylon threat. Both Cain and Adama were grizzled veterans, who had a serious personality clash when the Galactica encountered the Pegasus.
Michelle Forbes' performance as Cain really emphasized the pain she had experienced during the war, and how it had hardened her. She thought nothing of making tough calls like murdering her Executive Officer for insubordination, or sentencing two of Adama's crew members to execution. Where Adama worked with President Roslin to protect the civilian ships within the fleet, Cain actively ignored them, and put the needs of the military over those they were supposed to protect.
From Cain and Starbuck to Cylons like Number Six , there were several key female characters on both sides of the Cylon conflict. The fact that each humanoid Cylon model had their own character quirks and nuances gave Tricia Helfer a lot of rich material across all four seasons of Battlestar Galactica.
