Park officials are looking to past visitation numbers and the 2012 annular solar eclipse, which was also visible from the park.Once-in-a-lifetime 'ring of fire' solar eclipse to illuminate Utah's skies“That brought about 10,000 people to the park,” said park spokesperson Peter Densmore. “At that time, 10,000 people was a lot of people for Bryce Canyon. But now, you look at Memorial Day weekend, another busy time for the park, and we might get 10,000 people on a single day.
Densmore said Bryce Canyon National Park has about 1,000 parking spaces in total. They plan to close the park to private vehicles once all those spaces fill up Saturday morning. People will still be able to enter the park, but they’ll have to take the park’s shuttle system. Despite the threat of crowds, Densmore said there’s no better place to watch a celestial event like an solar eclipse.
“There are some situations where the word sublime just feels right,” he said. “There’s a mix of beauty and you’re awestruck at what you’re seeing. So to be able to witness that in the sky above a landscape that’s often described as sublime, the Bryce Amphitheater, that combination is something I can’t wait to experience myself.”
