Auburn’s football program was launched into a state of uncertainty amid a university-led inquiry into Harsin and his handling of the program during his first year with the Tigers.
Reports of Harsin’s uncertain future first circulated online Feb. 3, a day after Auburn failed to add to its 2022 recruiting class on National Signing Day. The following day, As everything began to unfold on the Plains, Harsin was on a preplanned vacation in Mexico. He strongly defended himself that Thursday night in an interview with ESPN that was published Friday morning as Auburn’s Board of Trustees meeting was underway.
Gogue also lamented the “feeding frenzy” caused by speculation on social media during the university’s fact-finding process, while Harsin described it as the most difficult week of his professional career—without having anything to do with football itself. He said the “personal attacks on my and my family went too far and were without justification” while expressing appreciation for how his family handled the negative spotlight.
