The Browns are serious about trading for controversial Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, who comes with legal trouble but would make them an instant Super Bowl contender.
The fact that Watson has agreed to meet with the Browns means he’s serious about waiving the no-trade clause in his contract to join them. It also means they’ve demonstrated to the Texans that they’re prepared to trade multiple first-round picks and possibly Baker Mayfield. They might also have to surrender other key players.
The Browns traded on Saturday for Cowboys four-time Pro Bowler receiver Amari Cooper, which makes their presentation to Watson much more tantalizing. They will continue to add to the receiver room, likely with one of the top college prospects in this receiver-rich draft. If the Browns land Watson, there’s even a slight chance Jarvis Landry would come back at a reduced rate for a chance to win a Super Bowl.
Although the Texans might not be interested in Mayfield, the Browns at least have something to offer that most other teams in the sweepstakes don’t: a plug-and-play starting quarterback who’s expected to fare better in 2022 coming off surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left non-throwing shoulder.
Watson, who sat out all last season while the criminal investigation was underway, maintained his innocence Friday after the grand jury decided not to charge him. This marks the second time the Browns have had a chance to acquire Watson, the former Clemson quarterback.They scouted him thoroughly in the 2017 draft, but passed on him at No. 1 overall in favor of Myles Garrett, and again at No. 12 when they traded the pick to Houston instead of drafting Watson themselves.
