Brookman: Calgary is a great city — let's work to keep it that way yyc

As Calgarians, we have a powerful reputation and an image of business. If I was to suggest an image for Calgary, I would use the words “brave, brash and bold.” Calgary has always had a no-nonsense reputation of getting things done in a big way, whether by being the energy capital of Canada, our agricultural heritage or the growing tech industry. Our image and brand around the world has its roots in the Calgary Stampede, the Olympics and, in more recent decades, as the home of the Calgary Flames.

Let’s stop dodging and weaving and get on with the opportunities before us — take what we have and work as a solid community to promote them, to make them bigger, better and all that they can be. Let’s get the new BMO Centre completed and work together as a community to show the world what the famous white cowboy hat really means. The new event centre will also be a critical piece of infrastructure for the future and will benefit all Calgarians.

Stop the hand-wringing, the evasive news conferences, the head-down answers and get on with the business of doing business. The cost of the event centre will be about one-10th of the cost of the Green Line LRT project but will generate far more impact on our community. As someone once said: “No one visits Paris because of its subway system.”Article content
