allegations of workplace abuseHere’s the rundown: Broadway shuttered in March of 2020, and the closure punched a $15 billion hole in New York’s economy, not to mention nearly 100,000 jobs put into limbo or wiped out altogether. 18 months later, marquees are lighting up again. Over three dozen shows have already announced their return over the next six months, including ten brand new plays, seven of which are by Black authors.
But it’s going to be a slow build, not a big bang. The Delta variant has thrown the industry into turmoil, with deaths skyrocketing nationwide and travel restrictions tightening for the near future. However, if you’re going to be in a room of 1,000 people, there’s no better place than a Broadway theater: admission isand masks are required inside, even with the upgraded ventilation systems most landlords have installed.
Technically, Broadway was “back” earlier this summer: Bruce Springsteen was the first act to perform for a sold-out, fully vaccinated venue in June. But it wasn’t untilin August that a Broadway theater housed an honest-to-God play, signaling the return of live entertainment in New York on a grand scale.
